Engagement Rings without Diamonds

Almost any gemstone can be used in an engagement ring, however the best engagement rings without diamonds would be those that incorporate strong, hard stones. As they are generally worn everyday, engagement rings need to be durable and so from a longevity perspective, the harder stones are better.

The Moh’s hardness scale, which measures the hardness of gemstones from one-to-ten (diamond being ten) would suggest that anything above seven is best for rings, especially if worn everyday. This would also include sapphires and rubies, which are more likely to withstand the test of time. Apart from diamonds, blue sapphires are a popular choice for engagement rings, the well-known example being Princess Diana’s ring, now worn by Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.
