GEM CARVERS — reshaping the market

After 50 years selling their gemstone carvings and jewellery internationally, Bruno and Richard Moser are now also focusing on the Australian market.

As manufacruring jewellers in Burnside, Adelaide, Bruno Moser and his son Richard have enjoyed considerable success selling their carved gemstone jewellery to US and Japanese customers for almost half a century but feel the time is now right to sell their products locally as well.

Born in Zurich, Bruno studied graphic design in Basel and qualified as a goldsmith before emigrating to Australia in 1949 when he was just 19.

On his arrival in Sydney he worked as a manufacturing jeweller at Hardy Brothers creating custom made rings and other high class jewellery for several months before being “seduced by the centre of Australia” and heading to the Andamooka opal fields to mine and cut opals.

Bruno stayed on the fields for a year before returning to Sydney and establishing his own jewellery manufacturing business which he ran for 12 years until he again succumbed to the lure of Andamooka and moved back with his wife Helen.

Bruno and Helen loved life on the opal fields and stayed there for 11 years but the demands of raising two children led them move to Adelaide. Soon after their arrival in South Australia’s capital, Bruno began carving opals and other gemstones and creating designer handcrafted jewellery with some of the finished pieces although he had no formal training in sculpture or gemstone carving.

“I am not self-trained,” he says, “I am self-inspired.”

“My sculpting method is so different from the average gemcutter’s and it takes time.

“I always work with the original form of the stone, rather than against it, as the stone was here long before we dug it up.

“I don’t sit down and design the pieces. In many ways the stone in front of me designs itself. Basically I just cut out the ‘impurities’ to reveal the essence of the material within and then work with that. This method keeps much more of the original material than normal gem-cutting and makes good business sense too as I can use stones that traditional cutters cannot.”

The end-result of this unique carving method are smooth, curvaceous flowing “harmonious shaped” sculptures that capture the essence of “wind, water and the flow of nature.” Larger stones are made into stand-alone sculptures while smaller ones are incorporated into handcrafted 18 carat gold and platinum custom made jewellery designs — often accented with high quality white and coloured diamonds.

Richard, the younger of Bruno’s three sons, joined the business in 1988.

With a similar designs ethos, the two men have in the years since have worked together and successfully exhibited and sold their sculptures and jewellery designs to customers in the US, Japan, Europe and Taiwan.

Despite the international acclaim, bestowed on their work, Richard says their carvings and jewellery were largely ignored on the local market as “most Australians didn’t appreciate the beauty of opal which is one of the main gemstone we work with.”

Richard believes that Australians’ attitudes towards opal has begun to change as we have become more multicultural and have developed “more worldly tastes in fashion, art and jewellery.”

He also stresses that the company’s designs are no longer just limited to opal — around two thirds of the jewellery features other coloured stones such as sapphire, aquamarine, tourmaline, garnet and quartz and now diamonds, creating custom made engagement rings in Adelaide.

“We have already begun selling our pieces in some local jewellery stores in Adelaide to generate consumer interest.”

Richard and Bruno conclude that although they are eager to focus on the Australian market, their sculptures and jewellery will still maintain their international presence.

“Our sculptures and jewellery will still be exhibited and sold all around the world,” says Bruno.
