What shape diamond would you prefer:
Round brilliant cut diamonds are the most commonly used stones.
Square princess cut are the second most popular.
Rectangular Emerald cut, Marquise cut, Trilliant cut, Asscher cut, Radiant cut, Cushion cut, Heart shape, and others are available, but unless she has specifically mentioned one of these types, it's better to stay simple.
Do you prefer a higher grade diamond and reduce the size, or a bigger size diamond and reduce the quality?
Going for size:
Good colour G-I, good clarity Si1-Si2,
With these gradings, we can find the biggest stone to fit your budget.
Going for high grade:
Very good colour F-G, Very good clarity Vs2-Si1, Very good - Excellent cut
Going for highest grade:
Excellent colour D-E, V VS1-VS2, Excellent Cut
Design questions:

White gold, Yellow gold, or Platinum are all good to use for custom made rings.
Simple classic designs or antique style detail.
Bezel setting (Rub over) or Claw setting (six or four claws).
A parallel band or tapering band.
Rounded band or flat band (side diamonds can only be put into a square band).
A fine delicate looking design or a heavy strong looking design.
